October 18th, the biology department will be hosting its first alumni seminar
at 3:30 pm in Devlin 008. The seminar speaker will be Alexander Lorestani
'09. Alex is the CEO of Geltor Inc. based out of San Leandro, CA. Geltor's
primary focus is on the production of vegan gelatin. Alex's seminar will
focus on his time here at Boston College and how it helped prepare him for his
current role of leading a company that is solving a current economic and
environmental need through biology.

and Climate Change: A Conversation with Michael Pollan hosted by Juliet Schor

For
the past twenty years, Michael Pollan has been writing books and articles about
the places where the human and natural worlds intersect: food, agriculture,
gardens, drugs, and architecture. He is the author of numerous bestsellers
including In Defense of Food, The Omnivore’s Dilemma, and The Botany of Desire.
In 2003, Pollan was appointed the John S. and James L. Knight Professor of
Journalism at UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism, and the director of
the Knight Program in Science and Environmental Journalism. In addition to
teaching, he lectures widely on food, agriculture, and gardening.
Michael
Pollan will be interviewed by Boston College’s Juliet Schor, professor of
Sociology, whose research focuses on work, consumption, and sustainability. Her
interests include the sharing economy, climate change, and alternative food
provisioning.

The Environmental Studies Program will be sponsoring a talk by
Governor Bill Ritter on climate change and energy policy and his book Powering
Forward – What Everyone Should Know About America’s Energy Revolution.
Governor Ritter was elected Colorado's 41st governor in 2006.
During his four-year term, he established Colorado as a national and
international leader in clean energy by building a New Energy Economy. After
leaving the Governor’s Office, Ritter founded the Center for the New Energy
Economy at Colorado State University, which works with state and federal policy
makers to create clean energy policy throughout the country.

In this talk, Guthman will discuss the origins and development
of the food movement in order to explain how it came to focus on marked based
alternatives and also to show how it has evolved response to critique. Shen
will then discuss three cases that reflect a new food activism, with particular
focus on the battle against methyl bromide in strawberry production.

This year’s MIT Water Summit will focus on issues at the heart of the
food-water nexus, reflecting on the role of water in food production – both in

On November 6-7, representatives from industry, academia,
government, and NGOs will convene at MIT to discuss issues at the heart of the

Rabobank North America) and Christopher Briggs (Executive

HISTORICAL SOCIETY SEMINARS – ENVIRONMENTAL HISTORY
The
Boston Environmental History Seminar is an occasion for scholars as well as
interested members of the public to discuss aspects of American environmental
history from prehistory to the present day. Presenters come from a variety of
disciplines including history, urban planning, and environmental management.
Most
seminar meetings revolve around the discussion of a pre-circulated paper.
Sessions open with remarks from the essayist and an assigned commentator, after
which the discussion is opened to the floor. After each session, the Society
serves a light buffet supper.

Institute
The EERI post graduate internship program offers recent college
graduates an opportunity to extend their education and begin building a
professional network through relevant real world experience in a professional
setting. Interns make a 6 month commitment to EERI and gain valuable experience
on earthquake mitigation and exposure to earthquake-focused professional
organizations. EERI is committed to providing a learning experience through
meaningful work assignments related to our mission of seismic risk reduction.
EERI’s internships are approximately six-months long, and offer
engagement with a number of interesting EERI projects and Institute activities,
including Learning from Earthquakes, the School
Earthquake Safety Initiative, the World Housing Encyclopedia, annual meetings (the 11th
National Conference on Earthquake Engineering in 2018), and technical seminars and webinars.

Bacon Fellowship at Harvard Kennedy School
The Louis Bacon Environmental Leadership Fellowship provides
a full tuition scholarship, health insurance, a living stipend, and a
comprehensive co-curricular program for up to five admitted degree candidates
for the full course of study at HKS (one or two years). Students from joint or
concurrent degree programs offered by the school are encouraged to apply.

Winter/Spring Intern
The Environmental Voter Project is looking for highly-motivated
undergraduates to join our selective Winter/Spring Internship Program. Interns
will work closely with the Field Director and the CEO to learn about subjects
such as field campaigning, nonprofit communications and data analytics. Interns
will be expected to devote time to field outreach, senior staff support, event
planning, research, and drafting of membership communications, blog posts, and
stakeholder presentations. In addition to gaining valuable nonprofit advocacy
skills, interns will become talented organizers and political operatives by
learning the nuts and bolts of nonprofit work and electoral campaigning from an
exciting and innovative organization. We are seeking responsible, motivated
candidates who can commit to 12+ hours per week for this program. This is an
unpaid internship in Boston, MA.
