Environmental Studies Course Registration

Dear Environmental Studies minors,

I hope you are all having a great winter-into-spring. We are approaching time to register for courses for the fall 2013 semester. Below are some important items that you need to know about the registration process.

If you have questions about the ES minor requirements, first check requirements sheets, which have been updated for the 2013-2014 academic year (http://www.bc.edu/content/bc/schools/cas/envstudies/minor.html). Note that the class of 2014 has a different set of requirements than the others. Most of what I have written below applies to the classes of 2015 and beyond. You can get in touch with ESP grad assistant Kevin Brown (envstudies@bc.edu) in Devlin 213 or me if you have questions. In choosing your courses, remember that only one of the courses you take for the minor can also satisfy requirements for your major or the university core, and that the courses must involve at least three different departments.

Next fall, we have two options available for the Policy Foundation course requirement: Environmental Economics (EC278, TTh 3-4:15) and Environmental Sociology I (SC562, Fridays 3-5:30). The ESP has 20 slots reserved in EC278 for minors; to request one of these email MaryEllen Doran (maryellen.doran@bc.edu) in the Economics Department early during the registration period (April 11-19). Please include your Eagle number and that you are an ES minor in the email, and make sure you have room in your schedule for the course. SC562 is “department permission” course designed for seniors and some juniors. Please email Prof. Brian Gareau (gareau@bc.edu) if you would like to take the course. Note that two other courses (MB145 and UN256) will be available to fill this requirement in the spring semester 2014.

For the Environmental Systems requirements (GE201-208) we are offering Environmental Systems: Ecosystems (GE202 and lab GE212) with Prof. Martha Carlson Mazur in the first half of the fall semester and Environmental Systems: The Human Footprint (GE201 and lab GE211) with me for the second half of the semester. You can register for one or both courses. The lecture for both is MWF at 10. Please note that the Student Services computer system does not allow you to register for two courses offered during the same time slot (even though in this case they will not meet at the same time during the semester). To register for both courses, register for one (and its lab) normally, and then email Ursula DellaPorta (sullivau@bc.edu) in Student Services and request that she register you into the other course and lab section. Note that GE203, GE204, GE207 and GE208 will be offered in the spring semester 2014.

For electives, consult the ES minor website, (http://www.bc.edu/content/bc/schools/cas/envstudies/minor.html). There are many options available for the fall semester. Note that all Earth and Environmental Sciences (GE) courses (including GE202-208) can count toward the ES minor elective requirements for the classes of 2015 and beyond.

Please be in touch with Kevin or me you have questions.

In the spring of 2005, James Balog (’74), recipient of the 2005 Arts Council Alumni Award, launched The Extreme Ice Survey. This project used revolutionary time-lapse cameras to document changes in the glacial landscape of the Arctic. The survey resulted in spectacular footage that became the documentary Chasing Ice, winner of Sundance’s Excellence in Cinematography Award for U.S. Documentary Filmmaking.

The documentary is directed by Jeff Orlowski, a cinematographer and award-winning filmmaker who has worked with Balog since 2007. The Extreme Ice Survey project was a collaboration between scientists and artists, including videographers, photographers, and a team of extreme-weather expedition specialists.

Sponsored by Institute of Liberal Arts, BC Energy and Environment Alumni Network, the Environmental Studies Program, the Earth and Environmental Sciences Department, EcoPledge, and the Arts Council. Event is free, but registration is required.

The Bard Center for Environmental Policy and the Bard MBA in Sustainability are looking for motivated students who are ready to embark on an exciting educational journey. We would be very grateful if you could forward this email to students or recent graduates at your university / college who might enjoy finding out about our pioneering master's degree programs (see below).

Our students come from a variety of academic disciplines, and they bring to Bard a passion about their future role as environmental and business leaders. Interdisciplinary course work, faculty-student mentorships, and professional hands-on experiences provide the platform students need to succeed academically and professionally. Both Bard CEP and Bard MBA offer competitive merit fellowships, project assistantships, and campus employment opportunities for qualified candidates.

Thank you in advance for your help spreading the word to Bard College students interested in graduate school!

The Bard MBA in Sustainability focuses on the business case for sustainability. We train students to see how firms can integrate economic, environmental, and social objectives, the triple bottom line, to create successful businesses that build a more sustainable world. Graduates of the Bard MBA Program will transform existing companies, start their own businesses, and pioneer new ways of operating that meet human needs, while protecting and restoring the earth’s natural systems. The Bard MBA is a low-residency program structured around “weekend intensives” with regular online instruction between these residencies. Five of these intensives are held each term: four in the heart of New York City and one in the Hudson Valley. Residencies take place over four days, beginning Friday morning, and ending Monday afternoon.

The Bard Center for Environmental Policy believes that to solve environmental challenges and achieve sustainability in our institutions and in society, government and business policies must be grounded in the best available science. Bard CEP’s cohort-based program and intensive, campus-based, first-year curriculum require students to synthesize information from a range of disciplines and sources. The emphasis on science-based policy enables students to progress from knowledge of the issues to the formulation of feasible, effective policy responses. Distinctive program features include a modular approach to course work; close student-faculty interaction; professional internships; practical training in geographic information systems (GIS), statistics, leadership, and communication strategies; and research opportunities created to fit student interests.
