In the spring of 2005, James Balog (’74), recipient of the 2005 Arts Council Alumni Award, launched The Extreme Ice Survey. This project used revolutionary time-lapse cameras to document changes in the glacial landscape of the Arctic. The survey resulted in spectacular footage that became the documentary Chasing Ice, winner of Sundance’s Excellence in Cinematography Award for U.S. Documentary Filmmaking.
The documentary is directed by Jeff Orlowski, a cinematographer and award-winning filmmaker who has worked with Balog since 2007. The Extreme Ice Survey project was a collaboration between scientists and artists, including videographers, photographers, and a team of extreme-weather expedition specialists.
Sponsored by Institute of Liberal Arts, BC Energy and Environment Alumni Network, the Environmental Studies Program, the Earth and Environmental Sciences Department, EcoPledge, and the Arts Council. Event is free, but registration is required.

The Bard MBA in Sustainability focuses on the business case for sustainability. We train students to see how firms can integrate economic, environmental, and social objectives, the triple bottom line, to create successful businesses that build a more sustainable world. Graduates of the Bard MBA Program will transform existing companies, start their own businesses, and pioneer new ways of operating that meet human needs, while protecting and restoring the earth’s natural systems. The Bard MBA is a low-residency program structured around “weekend intensives” with regular online instruction between these residencies. Five of these intensives are held each term: four in the heart of New York City and one in the Hudson Valley. Residencies take place over four days, beginning Friday morning, and ending Monday afternoon.

The Bard Center for Environmental Policy believes that to solve environmental challenges and achieve sustainability in our institutions and in society, government and business policies must be grounded in the best available science. Bard CEP’s cohort-based program and intensive, campus-based, first-year curriculum require students to synthesize information from a range of disciplines and sources. The emphasis on science-based policy enables students to progress from knowledge of the issues to the formulation of feasible, effective policy responses. Distinctive program features include a modular approach to course work; close student-faculty interaction; professional internships; practical training in geographic information systems (GIS), statistics, leadership, and communication strategies; and research opportunities created to fit student interests.

4th Annual GIS Contest!

Students are invited to present their GIS (Geographic Information Systems) Mapping work as part of a campus-wide celebration of geospatial research at Boston College. Prizes will be awarded to the top student entries which will be displayed in the O’Neill Library Reading Room on Wednesday, April 17, 2013.

Oberlin College invites applications for the position of Sustainable Technology Research Fellow. The successful candidate will assist in the development and management of “Environmental Dashboard,” a novel technological system that provides community residents with environmentally and socially contextualized real-time feedback on electricity and water flows and environmental conditions through residential and commercial buildings and through cities. C2C Fellows weekend training workshops, sponsored by the Bard Center for Environmental Policy , focus on concrete skills development, including fundraising and communication. Graduates of the weekend workshops are eligible for partial scholarships to CEP’s master programs in environmental policy, climate science and policy, and green business, as well as $1,000 scholarships for follow-on leadership trainings.

Texas A&M University is again hosting a Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) site funded by the National Science Foundation for 10 undergraduate students to conduct cutting-edge research in a transitional cloud forest in central Costa Rica. Specifically, the REU site provides a unique international opportunity for students to be immersed in the practice of active inquiry and research in:
1. Ecohydrology: feedback between forest vegetation and hydrology from the scale of an individual leaf to the entire stand
2. Hydrology: movement and distribution of water through the forest from above-canopy precipitation and cloud immersion, to stream and groundwater flow
3. Meteorology and climatology: spatial and temporal variation in precipitation, evapotranspiration and boundary layer structure from the scale of an individual stand to the entire watershed
4. Soil Science:structure and geochemistry of forest soil
5. Biogeography: distribution and structure of forest vegetation at various scales in the watershed
Successful applicants will receive all expenses paid trip to Costa Rica in addition to a $500 a week stipend.
