BC Libraries Sustainability Database

The BC Libraries would like to alert you to a trial of a new database which may be of use in your research and studies. JSTOR Sustainabilityis a collection of academic and policy research on environmental stresses and their impact on society. Senior Thesis Info Session

Are you interested in writing a senior thesis? Come to an information session, hosted by the Environmental Studies Program and the Earth and Environmental Sciences Department. We will discuss the thesis process, choosing and working with an advisor, and examples of previous students' thesis. This informal event will be beneficial for seniors already working on a thesis as well as sophomores and juniors who are simply interested in the option.

Jane Jacobs Lecture: Michael Tubbs on Building Community

Last November, Michael Tubbs was elected Mayor of Stockton, California. At 27, Tubbs is Stockton's youngest mayor and its first African-American mayor. He is a graduate of Stanford University with a Bachelor's degree in Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity and a Master's degree in Policy, Leadership and Organization Studies. During his time at Stanford, he served as President of the school's NAACP, and interned at the White House. Tubbs has championed reforms to improve police community relations, increased investment in the underserved areas of Stockton, increased opportunity for youth, and created coalitions with local, statewide and national interests to address very pressing issues.

Food and Climate Change: A Conversation with Michael Pollan hosted by Juliet Schor

For the past twenty years, Michael Pollan has been writing books and articles about the places where the human and natural worlds intersect: food, agriculture, gardens, drugs, and architecture. He is the author of numerous bestsellers including In Defense of Food, The Omnivore’s Dilemma, and The Botany of Desire. In 2003, Pollan was appointed the John S. and James L. Knight Professor of Journalism at UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism, and the director of the Knight Program in Science and Environmental Journalism. In addition to teaching, he lectures widely on food, agriculture, and gardening.

Michael Pollan will be interviewed by Boston College’s Juliet Schor, professor of Sociology, whose research focuses on work, consumption, and sustainability. Her interests include the sharing economy, climate change, and alternative food provisioning.

Governor Bill Ritter

The Environmental Studies Program will be sponsoring a talk by Governor Bill Ritter on climate change and energy policy and his book Powering Forward – What Everyone Should Know About America’s Energy Revolution.

Governor Ritter was elected Colorado's 41st governor in 2006. During his four-year term, he established Colorado as a national and international leader in clean energy by building a New Energy Economy. After leaving the Governor’s Office, Ritter founded the Center for the New Energy Economy at Colorado State University, which works with state and federal policy makers to create clean energy policy throughout the country.

Join us for the Kickoff Dinner of the MIT Water Innovation Prize on Monday, Oct. 23rd from 6:00pm at the MIT Media Lab 6th Floor (E14-648, 75 Amherst Street, Cambridge). Come to learn more about water innovation, pitch your own idea, or network to find teammates. We will hear from speakers across sectors about the world’s water challenges and new innovations to address them. We also invite individuals or teams to pitch their idea (3-5 min) - we welcome anything water-related. MASSACHUSETTS HISTORICAL SOCIETY SEMINARS – ENVIRONMENTAL HISTORY

The Boston Environmental History Seminar is an occasion for scholars as well as interested members of the public to discuss aspects of American environmental history from prehistory to the present day. Presenters come from a variety of disciplines including history, urban planning, and environmental management.

Most seminar meetings revolve around the discussion of a pre-circulated paper. Sessions open with remarks from the essayist and an assigned commentator, after which the discussion is opened to the floor. After each session, the Society serves a light buffet supper.

This seminar series is sponsored by MIT's History Faculty and Program in Science, Technology, and Society. This series covers a broad range of topics including food history, social history, and the connection between technology and  the environment.

Post Graduate Intern at Earthquake Engineering Research Institute

The EERI post graduate internship program offers recent college graduates an opportunity to extend their education and begin building a professional network through relevant real world experience in a professional setting. Interns make a 6 month commitment to EERI and gain valuable experience on earthquake mitigation and exposure to earthquake-focused professional organizations. EERI is committed to providing a learning experience through meaningful work assignments related to our mission of seismic risk reduction.

EERI’s internships are approximately six-months long, and offer engagement with a number of interesting EERI projects and Institute activities, including Learning from Earthquakes, the School Earthquake Safety Initiativethe World Housing Encyclopedia, annual meetings (the 11th National Conference on Earthquake Engineering in 2018), and technical seminars and webinars.

Louis Bacon Fellowship at Harvard Kennedy School

The Louis Bacon Environmental Leadership Fellowship provides a full tuition scholarship, health insurance, a living stipend, and a comprehensive co-curricular program for up to five admitted degree candidates for the full course of study at HKS (one or two years). Students from joint or concurrent degree programs offered by the school are encouraged to apply.

To apply for the 2017-2018 academic year, prospective degree candidates must complete the following two steps:
First, apply to the Harvard Kennedy School by December 4, 2017 at 5:00 p.m. EST.
Second, apply for the Louis Bacon Environmental Fellowship by January 24, 2018 at 5:00 p.m. EST.

Reporting to the Deputy Director, the Membership Manager will lead recruitment and expansion efforts for NCSE’s existing membership categories, including four-year and two-year institutions of higher education, and lead the development of new membership categories beyond our current membership base for launch in 2018.

INTERNSHIP WITH THE ENVIRONMENTAL VOTER PROJECT

Winter/Spring Intern
The Environmental Voter Project is looking for highly-motivated undergraduates to join our selective Winter/Spring Internship Program. Interns will work closely with the Field Director and the CEO to learn about subjects such as field campaigning, nonprofit communications and data analytics. Interns will be expected to devote time to field outreach, senior staff support, event planning, research, and drafting of membership communications, blog posts, and stakeholder presentations. In addition to gaining valuable nonprofit advocacy skills, interns will become talented organizers and political operatives by learning the nuts and bolts of nonprofit work and electoral campaigning from an exciting and innovative organization.  We are seeking responsible, motivated candidates who can commit to 12+ hours per week for this program. This is an unpaid internship in Boston, MA.
