Middlebury School of the Environment: Enviornmental Leadership in China

Apply by January 15th for Scholarship Opportunities
Deadline March 1
The Middlebury School of the Environment will have twin bases in Dali, a small city in the western reaches of western Yunnan province and the foothills of the Himilayas, and Kunming, the province’s capital and largest city. With locations in both places and the ability to move between these environments, the program will explore social-ecological systems along the wilderness, rural, urban interface. The landscapes of rural and urban Yunnan, along with unique conservation areas nearby, become our classroom as we seek to understand place in this unique environment.  As the world pivots to China, this country and its people illustrate the complexities of environmental problem solving in the 21st century. This program offers a hands-on experience exploring leadership and cultural diversity in sustainability initiatives. This is a six-week environmental studies program for college undergraduates and recent graduates based in Yunnan Province, China, with dual sites in Kunming and Dali. Students will take three college courses (nine semester-hours of credit) offered within a specially designed immersive curriculum that includes core course work, electives, leadership training, and field experiences.

Summer Internship - Research Experiences in Solid Earth Science for Students (RESESS)

Applications due Feb 1, 2019
Apply HERE
The RESESS Internship is a multi-summer internship program, primarily funded by the National Science Foundation, that is dedicated to increasing diversity in the geosciences. RESESS encourages applications from individuals who are members of a group that is historically underrepresented in the Earth sciences, and from students who can demonstrate experience working towards to raising awareness about the importance of the geosciences among broad or diverse segments of the population. This program is hosted by UNAVCO, Inc., in Boulder, Colorado.
Student interns work closely with a geoscience expert throughout the summer on a research project. We try to match the interests of the student with a relevant project. The student might work at the University of Colorado at Boulder, at the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, CO, or at UNAVCO in Boulder. In their second summer, interns are encouraged to work elsewhere in the U.S. with a research group at another university, government lab, or petroleum company.
Potential topics of interest include:
  • earthquakes & seismology
  • geophysics (including plate tectonics and more)
  • hydrology and water quality
  • petroleum geology
  • glaciers
  • volcanoes
  • sedimentology
  • geomorphology
  • Quaternary geology
  • physics of the Earth
We also encourage students to consider and suggest projects based in their community.

The program runs from late May to early August. For more information and to apply, visit: https://resess.unavco.org/resess.html

Harvard Forest Summer Research Program

Applications due Feb 1, 2019
The Harvard Forest Summer Research Program in Ecology is an opportunity for students to participate in 11 weeks of mentored, paid, independent research focusing on the effects of natural and human disturbances on forest ecosystems, including global climate change, hurricanes, forest harvest, and pest and pathogens. Researchers come from many disciplines, and projects center on community ecology, paleoecology, land-use history, soil science, atmosphere-biosphere exchanges, ecophysiology, landscape modeling, and data provenance.

BC Prof. Noah Snyder is co-leading one of the summer research projects, "Group Project: Reconstructing landscape change in New England from lake sediments: interaction of humans, vegetation, climate change, and extreme weather." Contact him at noah.snyder@bc.edu if you are interested in this opportunity. The application deadline is February 1.

University of North Carolina at Charlotte: Hiring Teaching Assistants

Applications due Feb 1, 2019
The Department of Geography and Earth Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte offers a Master of Science in Earth Sciences degree with opportunities for study and research in the areas of soils, weathering, surface processes, geology, hydrology, atmospheric science,  remote sensing, spatial analysis, and environmental science. Our program offers Earth Science graduate students personal guidance typical of a relatively small department, with the field, laboratory, and computing facilities and resources that accompany a much larger unit. Within this context, you will find a healthy combination of both field- and model-based Earth Science research as well as applied and academic research opportunities.

Our program is currently seeking competitive candidates for several teaching assistant positions beginning in fall 2019. Teaching assistantship funding may be supplemented by tuition awards or RA funding for exceptional candidates.

If you are interested in pursuing cutting-edge Earth Sciences research in our multi-disciplinary program, please consult the program website at https://geoearth.uncc.edu/masters-programs/masters-earth-sciences  and faculty research at https://geoearth.uncc.edu/people.

Review of applications will begin February 1, 2019.  Apply at https://gradadmissions.uncc.edu/.

Doris Duke Conservation Scholars Program

Applications due Feb 8, 2019
Environmental Studies students have participated in this program before!

Applications for the Doris Duke Conservation Scholars Program (conservationscholars.ucsc.edu) at the University of California Santa Cruz are now available. Each March we select 20 early-undergraduate Scholars from around the country to participate in a two-year conservation mentorship program centered on the summers between academic years. Our goal is to serve students from groups traditionally underrepresented in conservation, across disciplines, who can contribute to diversifying, redefining, and strengthening efforts to protect land, wildlife and water.  We focus our efforts on serving college freshmen, sophomores, and juniors with two years of college left at a stage when we can support their undergraduate careers and their choices as they graduate.  Students who attend or are transferring to any four-year institution in the US, its territories and Native nations are eligible.  US citizens, permanent residents, DACA and Dreamer students are eligible to apply. International students are not eligible for the program.
During the first year Scholars participate in an eight-week, intensive summer course integrating conservation design, leadership and research experiences while traveling with a close group of peers and mentors. During the second summer, Scholars pursue eight-week research and practice internships with nationally recognized conservation organizations and agencies.  A professional development retreat after the second summer brings together the Scholar cohort and prepares them to apply for jobs and graduate school. Throughout the two years and beyond, we work with home mentors at each Scholar’s campus to provide ongoing support. Scholars receive travel and lodging support and a $4,000 stipend each summer and become part of the national Doris Duke Conservation Scholars network for life.
Applications for the 2019 class of Scholars are available on the website and due February 8, 2019. For more information, visit conservationscholars.ucsc.edu or email the Program Director, Dr. Justin Cummings, jacummin@ucsc.edu.
